Historical

iEmulators was created in November 2013 for easy-install emulator apps that don’t require a jailbreak. The idea started as a temporary hobby replacement that grew to stand on its own two feet. It began with little to no structure until 2014 when it started to grow. They makers decided to put all their effort into a full redesign for a version 2.0, and the iemulators.com we know today was born. Here’s how they tell it:

“iEmulators 2.0 was coded and designed from the ground up by Start3rs founding member Dario Sepulveda (@mithical) with the help of his team Jon (@OPERATIONiDROID) and Tyler Livingston (@The120thWhisper) who focused on filling out content, videos, app descriptions, screenshots, app testing and more.”

The site hit peak popularity between iOS 9 and iOS 11 releases. Their openness and transparency vibed with the community and gave access to a huge library of apps from multiple sources.

Offer Any Special Features

What sets iEmulators apart is their complementary, non-competitive attitude to serve the alternative app stores around them. They began with basic reviews for app stores like Builds.io, GBA4iOS, and AltStore, and even included tutorial videos on how to navigate each store. They had no qualms about sending people elsewhere, saying:

“We do not care about competition or other sites doing what we do. This project is meant to be a fun and educational exercise for the Start3rs as we learn more about app development, web coding and design. We intend to use what we learn from this experience to better our efforts and create even more projects in the future.”

Distribution Methods:

iEmulators is using the classic distribution method of Apple Enterprise Certificates. Once valuable, thanks to the driven community and the Streisand Effect. This method is largely fading, but seeing active involvement and upkeep to make sure people are getting the applications they want.

Overview

iEmulators remains a game changer for ratings and reviews of the alternative app market, even as their ‘educational exercise’ begins to fall behind. The design has not been updated in years and their user interface, once convenient, is now out-of-date and a bit slow. If you’re a fan of the originals, then iEmulators is a good place to see where things began. All that being said, there is still a strong and loyal following that will swear by this site no matter what.

They keep to their mission to provide users with access to emulators that can’t be found within the App Store, and to download them without a jailbreak. Their apps are a mixed bag with something for everyone, while their main page is a good place for updates on what’s on what’s happening in the app world. The community owes a lot to their existence, and we would recommend taking a look for a good lens in which to view the community through.

“We also believe that developers of these amazing emulators and apps deserve a lot of the credit for the work and time they spend making all these things possible. A majority of our time designing version 2.0 was spent meticulously adding app descriptions and linking out to the people who developed the emulators. We included their names, Twitter, copyright, and their websites in the hopes that our users take a moment to look into them and personally thank them for their efforts, or even donate to them. Without them, iEmulators wouldn’t exist.”
